75 Year Harvard Study just released: “What Men Need to Live a Happy Life"

In 1938, Harvard University began following 268 male undergraduate students and kicked off the longest-running longitudinal studies of human development in history.  The study’s goal was to determine as best as possible what factors contribute most strongly to human flourishing.

The astonishing range of psychological, anthropological, and physical traits — ranging from personality type to IQ to drinking habits to family – indicates just how exhaustive and quantifiable the research data has become.

Recently, George Vaillant, who directed the study for more than three decades, published the study’s findings in the 2012 book Triumphs of Experience and the following is the book’s synopsis:
Marriages bring much more contentment after age 70, and physical aging after 80 is determined less by heredity than by habits formed prior to age 50.  As you can imagine, the study’s discoveries are bountiful, but the most significant finding of all is that “Alcoholism is a disorder of great destructive power.”

In Triumphs of Experience, Vaillant raises a number of factors more often than others, but the one he refers to most often is the powerful correlation between the warmth of your relationships and your health and happiness in your later years.
In Vallant’s own words, the #1 most important finding from the Grant Study is this: “The seventy-five years and twenty million dollars expended on the Grant Study points to a straightforward five-word conclusion: Happiness is love.  Full stop.”

A recent John’s Hopkins study showed that better hearing can help better memory. In this study, since loving relationships was the most important factor to create a fulfilling life, and without good communication, loving relationships are more difficult, and without being able to hear others well, communication is affected, good hearing may be one of the key factors to help nourish loving relationships.

St. George Exchange Club Gives Proceeds from Garage Sale to Local Charity

The local St. George Exchange Club teamed up with the Canyonlands Chapter of Thrivent's for Lutherans to host a community yard sale with all the funds going to the local Solomon's Porch's Sunday Noon Dinner for the homeless in our area. There are other Homeless Shelters in our community but no one is open for meals during the weekend, so the local Solomon's Porch Foursquare Fellowship stepped up and began to offer a noon meal on Sunday for the homeless. They will usually feed between 40 to 70 people each Sunday following their regular worship services.

In addition to raising over $1,050 at the Yard Sale the local Canyonlands Chapter matched $450, so the total contribution to Solomon's porch Foursquare church was $1500. Presenting the money to the Foursquare Fellowship was left to right Bobbi Butka from the Canyonlands, Jimi Kestin from Solomon's Porch, Brett Labrum, president of the St. George Exchange Club and Neal Smith, club member and Board member of the Canyonlands Chapter of Thrivent for Lutherans.
The local Exchange Club was instrumental in organizing the yard sale and advertising it to the community for a very successful event!

JensenBayles - PLANNING IN SECOND MARRIAGES

Phillip G. Gubler and Thomas J. Bayles
We all know someone who is in a second marriage and many of us are in a second marriage.  Second marriages can be exciting and fulfilling while at the same time present special planning challenges. A second marriage may include his children, her children, and sometimes our children.  How will the new spouse be provided for in the estate plan?  Can the assets of each spouse be protected for their respective children while still providing for the new spouse? The competing interests are between the children of the first spouse to pass away and the surviving spouse.
Estate planning challenges in second marriages can be solved with a combination of good communication and smart planning.  Creation of a trust is one way to provide for a new spouse after the death of a spouse while preserving the balance of the assets for the deceased spouse’s children.  A couple can also narrow the assets available for a new spouse with a trust by including a provision for a surviving spouse to occupy the residence during the surviving spouse’s lifetime. Upon the death of both spouses the residence is then distributed to the children of the spouse that contributed the residence.  There are many other solutions to planning in second marriages that will provide peace of mind.  An experienced estate planning attorney should be hired to identify the solution that works best for your situation.

Utah law provides a default estate plan applicable to Utah residents in a second marriage with children from a prior marriage who fails to take the time to prepare a customized estate plan.  The default plan is likely not what a person in a second marriage would want or expect.  Generally, Utah’s intestate law provides that the surviving spouse could be entitled to the first $75,000, plus one half of the balance of the deceased spouse’s intestate estate.  The children of the deceased spouse receive the balance of the deceased spouse’s intestate estate.  There are several exceptions in this law so please do not rely upon the summary provided.

JensenBayles, LLP provides a broad spectrum of legal services.  Thomas J. Bayles has been actively providing advice in the areas of trusts, wills, probate and tax planning in the St. George market for over 15 years.
